Traveling up the Rejang River on a fast ferry we saw many stacks of logs like this on the banks. We saw no forests of large trees so these must have been cut further inland. The man on the pile shows how large they were. Some of these logs over three feet in diameter may have required two hundred years of growth. We were amazed at the numbers of such logs we saw waiting for transport or headed out to sea on ships and barges. While this created jobs and profits, we doubted that a harvest of this scale was sustainable. We also were saddened by the loss of rare and endangered species caused by these vast logging operations. |
